A massive fire at a home off Skyline Drive in Oakland, NJ quickly grew to six alarms as firefighters battled water supply problems. No one was home when the blaze broke out around noon, and it was considered a total loss. Several firefighters were treated for exhaustion and smoke inhalation.
Crews initially stretched a hose a long distance to the scene, but it broke and had to be replaced; the hydrant it was connected to also turned out to have no pressure, requiring a line from a closer hydrant. Tankers from Mahwah, Ringwood, and Franklin Lakes shuttled water from area lakes, with additional support expected from Rockland County. In all, companies from 17 municipalities assisted, including Tallman. Firefighters later filled the structure with high-expansion foam after weight-bearing walls began to sag. Nearby residents were evacuated and surrounding roads closed while crews worked the scene.
