Our History

The Tallman Volunteer Fire Department, located on Route 59 in Tallman, New York, proudly serves the Town of Ramapo, including the Villages of Airmont, Montebello, portions of Monsey, Suffern, and Wesley Hills. Our fire district encompasses a diverse combination of residential areas, light industry, and sections of the New York State Thruway.

Founded on June 1, 1909, the Tallman Volunteer Fire Department has maintained a rich tradition of community service for over a century. Our mission remains steadfast: to protect life and property utilizing highly trained volunteers with expertise in firefighting, rescue, and accident extrication.

Founding and Early Years

The Department was formed out of necessity as the local population grew and the demand for organized fire protection became increasingly urgent. One of the first challenges faced by the fledgling department was how to alert firefighters to an emergency. A committee petitioned the local church to use its bell as a signal system. The church agreed, and a system was implemented: ten taps to signal a fire, followed by directional indicators — two taps for north, three for east, four for west, and five for south.

In October 1909, during a meeting at the Grange Hall with 26 members present, a motion was passed to construct a fire hall for no more than $4,500. By January 1910, prior to construction, the department voted to purchase its first fire engine from the Kamhana Fire Apparatus Company for $1,000.

When the fire truck was delivered later that year, a core value was instilled — a tradition of continual learning, practice, and meticulous care of apparatus. In 1911, Tallman received its first parade invitation from Spring Valley Hook and Ladder Company. In 1912, the decision was made to begin construction of the firehouse.

As more residents moved into the area and the fire district transitioned from a primarily agricultural community to a more suburban and residential region, the department's membership and operational needs expanded. Many volunteers served not only the community but also the nation — participating in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War — all while continuing to grow and adapt the fire department to meet changing demands.

Growth and Development

Throughout the 20th century, the department responded to the evolving needs of the community through expansion, innovation, and continuous training. Motorized apparatus replaced the original horse-drawn units, new firehouses and additions were constructed to house more vehicles and equipment, and the department actively embraced public education, community involvement, and tactical development.

Present Day

Today, the Tallman Volunteer Fire Department is a modern, highly capable emergency response organization. The department maintains a state-of-the-art fleet consisting of:

• 1 Highly Equipped Squad Apparatus (20-Squad)
• 1 100' Mid-Mount Tower Ladder (20-Tower)
• 1 Utility Vehicle (20-EQ)
• 1 Polaris UTV for Wildland Operations (20-UTV)
• 1 Personnel Transport Vehicle (20-Patrol)
• 3 Chief's Vehicles (20-1, 20-2, 20-3)
• 2 Rapid Response Vehicles (20-RRV-1, 20-RRV-2)
• 1 Enclosed Trailer (asset of the Ramapo Swiftwater Rescue Task Force)
• 1 Boat Trailer (asset of the Ramapo Swiftwater Rescue Task Force, established in 2025 and spearheaded by Tallman and Hillcrest Fire Departments)

The department includes approximately 50 active firefighters and junior firefighters, who undergo weekly, comprehensive training in modern firefighting, rescue, and emergency operations. These volunteers contribute thousands of hours annually — responding to calls, maintaining equipment, and participating in drills and community service — entirely on a voluntary basis. The Department started an EMS program in 2022, becoming certified through NYS DOH as a BLSFR agency, and currently has 10 Firefighter/EMT members.
