A condominium fire broke out on the second floor of the Society Hill complex in Mahwah, NJ on the afternoon of February 2, 2016, and quickly spread upward toward the exterior stairway. As the blaze grew, Mahwah police officers spotted a 9-year-old girl still on a third-floor balcony after believing all residents had been evacuated. Officers called up to her and she climbed over the railing and dropped into their arms, uninjured. She was checked out by ambulance crews and reunited with her family shortly after.

In addition to numerous New Jersey fire departments, Tallman, Suffern, and Hillburn firefighters responded to assist with mutual aid.
