The Tallman Fire Department, in cooperation with Hackensack University Hospital and Air Med One, held a mutual aid training drill on calling in helicopters during emergency situations.
Air Med One went over procedures for calling in, setting up landing zones, radio procedures, and safety procedures when approaching and loading patients into the helicopters. All emergency equipment carried on the helicopter was discussed, along with a presentation on procedures to “rescue the rescuer” in case of a problem with the helicopter. Procedures for shutting down the engines, batteries, and extrication from the helicopter were reviewed in great detail.
At the end of the presentation, a landing zone was set up, Air Med One was called in and landed at the fire department, and a live review of the helicopter took place.
Participating in the drill were Tallman, Suffern, Mahwah NJ, West Milford NJ, and Ramapo Ambulance.
