Three families were displaced after a fire broke out early one Saturday morning in a multifamily home at 286 Cherry Lane in Airmont. Residents called 911 after smelling smoke around 6:30 a.m.; the fire had started in the basement and spread through the ceiling into the first floor, according to Tallman Fire Chief Christopher Szklany, whose department responded along with the Suffern Fire Department.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire mostly to the basement, though smoke filled the first and second floors. Chief Szklany said his crew was able to gain entry and knock the fire out quickly, calling it “a great stop.” Ramapo police said the fire did not appear suspicious. No residents were injured, but they were forced to move out because of structural damage.
The Red Cross assisted the displaced families, providing temporary shelter, clothing, food, and referrals to other agencies for one family of four adults and a child; the other two families, both with pets, stayed with friends and relatives.
