A house fire on Bayard Lane in Montebello Sunday evening drew a large multi-agency response, left a firefighter and the homeowner injured, and shut down a stretch of Route 202 for several hours overnight.
The blaze was reported fully involved at 41 Bayard Lane, with nearly a dozen fire departments responding to the scene. Preliminary reports indicate the fire may have started in a vehicle parked inside the home’s garage before spreading into the structure. Crews worked to bring the flames under control as emergency vehicles filled the area.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The homeowner was also reportedly injured; further details on the extent of either injury were not immediately available.
The response prompted Ramapo dispatchers to close Route 202 between Mayer Drive and West Gate Road for the duration of the incident, rerouting traffic through the area overnight. There were also unconfirmed reports that a 100-gallon propane tank on the property may have been compromised during the fire. The roadway reopened and police had cleared the scene by Monday morning.
Firefighters brought the fire under control after an extended operation. The cause remains under investigation.
